Artist Statement

Textiles are my language, a gentle yet powerful medium that carries histories of labour, care, and creative resistance. By reworking second-hand materials into new forms and facilitating collective creativity in workshops, my practice becomes an act of reciprocity.

Sharing is integral to the work; inspired by the commons, where community, collective resources and inclusivity are paramount, many of my pieces are made using donated threads and antique or second-hand fabrics. My works are often realised with communal machines or within the workshops I facilitate. In this way, the act of creating becomes part of a generous, conversational practice rooted in women’s communities and sustained by shared resources and collective care.

Textiles have long been undervalued in fine art spaces, despite their rich artistic and political potential. My practice explores how contemporary audiences engage with textiles, through a thoughtful balance of artwork, participation, and conversation, inviting reflection on an artform often associated with domestic labour. Through these themes, my work challenges societal norms and gender roles, reclaiming domestic spaces as sites of creative resistance influenced by decades of feminist artists.

In both form and subject matter, I engage with domestic environments through practices such as embroidery, appliqué, and rug hooking. Within the gallery, these works shift from everyday objects to sites of contemplation and, in some cases, interaction. By highlighting the creativity embedded in these often-overlooked, traditionally feminine skills and spaces, my work encourages conversations about their personal and political significance.

Through this process, stories naturally emerge, carried in both the materials and the conversations they inspire. By crafting familiar, inviting works that reference table settings, furnishings, or use soft, tactile mediums, I encourage connection and participation, ensuring the work remains a dynamic and evolving tribute to women’s creativity and resilience.

This commitment to sharing extends into my growing interest in blending my artistic practice with pedagogy. I facilitate both textile and broader art workshops for participants across a range of ages and skillsets, with an aim to create spaces for dialogue and reflection. This educational aspect of my practice is deeply connected to my studio work. Both are driven by the same principles of skill-sharing, collaborative making, and accessible creativity, shaping my evolving identity as an artist-teacher.

Work

Alongside my fine art practice, I create a range of commercial works, including colourful prints, greeting cards, and handmade jewellery. Rooted in a love for the beauty found in the everyday, these pieces carry the same spirit of care, playfulness, and attention to detail that runs through my studio practice.
